Studio Days

A day in the studio, built around what you want to make

Not a class with a timetable. A day in a working print studio with someone who has been doing this for twenty years, shaped around your idea rather than a syllabus. Most people arrive without knowing exactly what they want to make. That is fine. Working it out is part of it.

Arrange a dayFrom £225. Four people maximum.

How it works

  1. We talk first

A call before you book anything. What you want to make, what you've done before, what you'd like to walk out holding. I'll tell you honestly what's possible in the time.

  2. The day itself

My studio in Kimpton, Hertfordshire. Just you, or up to four of you. Everything is here: inks, paper, screens, the press. You bring an idea and a pair of hands.

  3. You leave with the work

Signed, and yours. Plus a written note of what to do next, because the day is more useful if it doesn't end at 5pm.

What a day can be

Pick one, or arrive with something not on this list. The call sorts it out.

Start from nothing

You have a feeling rather than an image. We work out what it wants to be, then make it.

Screenprint properly

One colour or five. Coating, exposing, registration, the squeegee. The parts that go wrong and why.

Watercolour and paint

Hand-painted work into or under the print. Where the ink stops behaving and something better happens.

Collage and monoprint

Cut paper, found material, one-off impressions. No two the same, which is the point.

Experimental surfaces

Oxidised copper, foil, glitter, varnish. The work that doesn't sit flat on paper.

Get unstuck

You already print. Registration drifts, ink bleeds, the second layer never sits right. Bring the problem.

You bring an idea and a pair of hands. Everything else is already here.

Pulling the squeegee through hot pink ink across the screen
Checking a fresh print against the screen for registration
Lifting the corner of a wet print away from the screen with a blade
Overhead view of finished prints drying in the studio

Length and price

The difference between these is time, scale and how far you get. Not how much attention you get. That part does not change.

Half Day

£225

Around four hours

One idea, one print, one afternoon.

Enough to pull a real print and understand how it happened. The usual starting point, and the one people buy as a gift.

Two Days

£695

Two full days

For something you actually want to keep.

Larger format, more layers, more risk. The right length if you want a proper edition, or you already print and want to push past where you're stuck.

All materials, inks and paper are included. Bring up to three other people at £150 each. Larger formats and framing can be added, so ask on the call.

The studio takes four people at most. Past that I cannot give everyone proper attention, so I do not take the booking.

Who books these

  • People who have never printed and want to find out whether they like it.
  • People who print already and have hit something they cannot solve alone.
  • Couples and friends who want a day making something instead of a day looking at something.
  • People buying it for someone else, which is most of the Half Days.

Before you worry about it

  • No experience needed, and no drawing ability either.
  • You do not need Photoshop. Bring a photo, a sketch, or nothing at all.
  • Everything is provided. Wear something you do not love.
  • Lunch is included. Tell me about allergies on the call.

If it is not right, I will say so

We speak before you book. If I do not think I can give you the day you are after, I will tell you on that call and you will not pay anything. If we do book and you need to move it, that is fine with fourteen days notice.

I would rather turn a day down than take money for one that was never going to work.

Arrange a day

Dates are arranged directly with me, so tell me roughly when suits and what you have in mind. I run a small number of these around my own printing, so there is usually a wait.
