Some words carry more weight than others. UTOPIA sits in your peripheral vision, catches the light, refuses to let you forget what we're aiming for.
This isn't about retrofuturism or design movements. It's about the gap between where we are and where we could be. The word itself — coined by Thomas More in 1516 as a pun on the Greek for 'no place' and 'good place'. A perfect place that doesn't exist. Yet.
UTOPIA — A 2-layer screenprint with holographic hot foil stamp. Clean, minimal, forward-thinking.
The process starts with typography. Not pulled from a font library but drawn, refined, stripped back to its essential form. Two screen layers build the foundation — registration marks measured to fractions of millimetres because precision matters when you're printing by hand. Then the holographic foil. Heat, pressure, timing. Get it wrong and the foil lifts or doesn't take at all. Get it right and light fractures across the surface, breaks into spectrum, changes as you move.
The long horizontal format is deliberate. 660 by 200 millimetres. It sits above eye level, spans wider than your peripheral vision allows you to take in at once. Like a horizon line. Like progress itself — always there, always just beyond complete grasp.
Loop Birch recycled paper holds the ink and foil without compromise. 298gsm weight. Substantial enough to frame confidently, light enough to ship safely. Each of the 50 prints signed and numbered in the Kimpton studio where this work gets made.
