A Very Fine House - Handpulled Screenprint

This started with a stack of wood type from a defunct Hertfordshire printworks. Oli spent months setting letters by hand before switching to screen, capturing that weight and deliberate spacing that only comes from physical type.

The phrase itself matters. Not 'house' or 'home' but 'a very fine house' — specific, considered, carrying the kind of formality our grandparents used when they meant something. The letterforms echo Victorian handbills and railway posters, when type was cut in wood and every letter cost something.

This comes from Oli's early experiments with typography, before he started layering colours and textures. Pure black ink on white paper. The registration marks are still visible at the edges — he keeps them there deliberately, proof this was made by hand, one pull at a time.

The archive pieces are different. They're from before Oli had worked out his process completely, when he was still figuring out pressure and timing. That roughness is why they work. You can see the hand in them, the slight variations between prints that galleries would call flaws and collectors recognise as proof of making.

Wood type was the internet of the 1800s — identical letters cut in workshops across the country, assembled into messages, then broken apart and reused. This print captures that democratic utility while celebrating something more permanent: the place you've chosen to call yours.
