This one came from a night listening to Betty Wright's 'Clean Up Woman' on repeat. That bassline, that voice — pure Miami soul from 1971. Wright was barely 18 when she recorded it, but she had the authority of someone who'd lived twice as long.

BETTY — A hand-pulled screenprint paying tribute to Betty Wright, the legendary soul singer from the '70s. Rare piece from the archive.

I was thinking about those early Hialeah recordings, the sound coming out of TK Records when disco was still called soul. Wright had this way of making every note count — no wasted gesture, no empty space. That's what I was after with the screen.

The process here was about restraint. Too many layers and you lose the punch. Too few and there's no depth. Wright's voice had that same balance — she could whisper and make you lean in, then belt and knock you back. The ink needed to do the same thing.

This is archive work — pulled years ago when I was still figuring out how to make the mesh do what I wanted. The edition was small. Most went to collectors who knew the music. This is one of the last.

Betty Wright died in 2020. The obits called her a 'pioneering' artist, which she was. But what they missed was the directness — the way she could cut through all the production and arrangement and just be present. No artifice. No distance between the feeling and the sound.

That's what this print is about. The space between intention and execution. The moment when the squeegee hits the mesh and everything either works or it doesn't. Wright understood that moment. She lived in it.

Perfect for: Anyone who knows the difference between soul and everything that came after. Anyone who's ever pulled a late night listening to records that changed how they hear music.

Shipping: Wrapped in acid-free tissue and shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube.
