Found cellophane in the studio. Started cutting it up, watching how the folds caught light. Sprayed through it onto copper sheets I'd been oxidising for months.
HEXA1 - Large original framed oxidised copper artwork. Abstract shapes created from cellophane plastic, spray painted and printed onto oxidised copper. First in the HEXA series.
The copper changes everything. Where paper absorbs ink uniformly, oxidised copper fights back. The patina creates texture you can't predict or control. Some areas drink the spray paint deep into the surface pitting. Others repel it entirely. The cellophane stencils leave sharp geometric breaks against these organic, corroded landscapes.
Each piece in the HEXA series uses the same process but no two look alike. The copper oxidation varies across every sheet. Different humidity when I sprayed. Different pressure through the stencils. The metal ages differently in each frame - some areas will continue darkening over years, others stay fixed.
This isn't printmaking in any traditional sense. No screens. No squeegees. No editioning. Just spray paint, plastic stencils, and copper that's been weathering in the Hertfordshire studio for the better part of a year. The geometric forms feel almost digital against the organic decay of the metal surface.
The scale matters here. At 670x990mm, these aren't intimate pieces. They're architectural. The hexagonal forms reference everything from molecular structures to alien landscapes, but really they're about the contrast between the manufactured perfection of the cellophane cuts and the chaotic beauty of oxidised metal.
