Seven years I've been working towards this series. Not the concept — the actual physical ability to print on copper and make it do what I wanted.
Copper oxidises differently every single time. You can't control how it ages, where the patina forms, how the surface responds to varnish and spray paint. Each piece in this series started with the same screens, but the copper decided what it wanted to become.
The screenprint layers build the mechanical framework — circuit-like patterns that reference our digital infrastructure. Then the spray paint adds the organic element, the human response to all that connectivity. Varnish overlays protect certain areas while letting others breathe and change over time.
I'm not trying to make a statement about technology being good or bad. It's more about the tension between the permanent and the evolving. The printed elements won't change. The copper will keep oxidising for decades. The spray paint sits somewhere between the two — fixed but reactive to light and atmosphere.
Five pieces exist. A, B, C and D are complete works with full spray paint treatments. E has lighter intervention — more about the copper surface and the printed elements. All are framed in hardwood tray frames I made in the studio.
This isn't gallery art. It's direct from my hands to your wall. The copper came from a scrapyard in Welwyn Garden City. The frame timber from a local mill. Everything paid for out of my own pocket because I needed to see if this process would work.
Each piece measures 385 x 335mm including the frame. Signed on the copper itself — the signature will oxidise along with everything else. Ready to hang, though the copper will keep changing for years.
